3 Things to Think About Before Starting a Cleaning Business

There are so many things to think about before starting a cleaning business, and most people underestimate the planning involved.

It’s not just buying some cleaning supplies and sticking a card in a shop window or a post on Facebook.

The foundation you build your business on will shape your entire business success.

If you’re at a crossroads in life – redundancy, a new baby, a big move, or simply wanting a fresh start, a cleaning business can be an incredible opportunity.

My own turning point came when I was seven months pregnant, with my second child, and unexpectedly became a full-time step-mum overnight.

Childcare for four kids would have swallowed my entire salary, so I needed a Plan B.

It was that Plan B became the business that completely changed my life.

Here are three key things to consider before starting a cleaning business so you can start strong, stay legal, and set yourself up for success.

1. Decide Your Legal Structure

Your legal structure impacts everything, from how you pay tax to how protected you are if something goes wrong.

It’s one of the first things to think about before starting a cleaning business, because you need it in place before you begin trading.

Ask yourself:

  • Will it just be you cleaning?
  • Are you starting with a partner or friend?
  • Do you want to grow into a team quickly?
  • Are you joining a franchise that requires you to be a limited company?

You can change your legal setup later (e.g., from sole trader to limited company), but there’s a proper process to follow.

2. Set Up the Essentials Before You Trade

Once you know your structure, the next set of things to think about before starting a cleaning business involves making sure you’re fully legal, protected, and organised.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Register as self-employed with HMRC (if operating as a sole trader).
  • Open a business bank account to keep finances clean and separate.
  • Get insurance – public liability, and employer’s liability if hiring.
  • Set up simple record-keeping for expenses, invoices, and client details.
  • Create a basic business plan – don’t panic, it doesn’t need to be formal.

These admin tasks may not be glamorous, but they’re the backbone of a safe, professional business.

3. Decide How You Will Operate Day-to-Day

The next set of things to think about before starting a cleaning business revolves around how you will actually run your service. This is where you begin shaping your business model.

Think about the following questions:

Services

  • What exactly will you offer – weekly cleans, deep cleans, end-of-tenancy, or commercial?
  • Will you provide materials, or will clients supply them?
  • Will you offer extras like ironing, dishes, and laundry?

Money

  • How much will you charge per hour or per service?
  • How much will you spend on products each month?
  • How will clients pay you — bank transfer, direct debit, or card?
  • What’s your process if a client underpays or doesn’t pay at all?

Clients

  • Who is your ideal client?
  • Where will you find them?
  • How far from home are you willing to travel?
  • How many hours a day can you realistically work?

Running the Business

  • How will you track your income and expenses?
  • How will you organise your clients, schedules, and jobs?
  • How will you quote confidently and stand out from other cleaners?

BONUS: Build your Foundations Before You Start Selling
