How to Market Your Cleaning Business for Free
(No Ads Needed)
No more blowing your budget on ads that don’t bring results!
If you’re a cleaning business owner trying to grow but don’t have a ton of money to throw at advertising,
I’ve got you.
This post is the written version of my YouTube video on how to market your cleaning business for FREE, and yes, these strategies actually work, as I’ve used them…
I
Let’s dive into 5 powerful ways you can market your cleaning business without spending a single cent on ads. 💪
1. Leverage Word of Mouth & Referrals
Your happy clients are your best marketing tool.
Here’s the truth: most people won’t give you a reference or testimonial unless you ask and, sometimes, incentivise them.
A referral program can be a way for your best clients to talk about your business and send people your way. Offer something low-cost to you but seen as high-value by the client.
For example, in my domestic business, I had a recommendation for a friend card with five stamps. For every new client referred to me by an existing client, I would send a Costa voucher for them to have a coffee on me as a thank-you and have their card stamped. After five stamps, I would give them a free 3-hour deep clean.
A referral scheme is a win-win for all parties, and who doesn’t love a win?!
✅ Action Step:
Set up a simple referral program. Offer a discount, a small gift, or a free service when a client refers someone who books with you. Make it easy to share your contact info, think referral cards or shareable links.
2. Optimise Your Google My Business Profile
Local SEO = FREE exposure.
When people search for “cleaners near me,” your business needs to show up.
Google My Business (GMB) is a game-changer for that, and it doesn’t cost a thing to set up and use. Hoorah!
Optimise your GMB profile for the areas you serve, so, for example, use the keywords “cleaners in Kent” – “domestic cleaners in Stoke-On-Trent” – “Commercial cleaning in Shrewsbury” etc – use keywords that reflect your area and where you serve.

✅ Action Step:
Claim your Google My Business listing. Add high-quality photos, respond to reviews, and ensure your contact info, hours, and service areas are up to date.
Having a complete profile will help you rank higher in local searches and build instant trust with potential clients that you are an honest and reputable business.
3. Use Social Media the RIGHT Way
Your feed should show more than just shiny sinks.
Posting pictures of clean homes is great; it’s what you do, and it shows your excellent attention to detail to potential clients.
But your social media should also show the value your service delivers, the pain-points you can solve for your clients, and the personality of you and your team members.
Be human. Have a varied social media feed that’s more than shower screens and shiny taps. Showing all areas of your business builds trust and gets people to book, as potential clients feel like they already know you.

✅ Action Step:
Post a mix of before & afters, cleaning tips, client shoutouts, and videos of your team in action.
Reels and Stories? Yes, please, use them! People want to see who they’re hiring, not just the taps you clean.
✨ Social proof (fancy marketing term for references and testimonials) sells my love, so use it!
4. Partner with Local Businesses
Who already has your dream clients?
👉🏼 Estate agents
👉🏼 Airbnb hosts
👉🏼 Property managers
👉🏼 Other service professionals – window/wheelie-bin/gutter/commercial/jet-wash cleaners etc – these people are in front of clients who need your services already.
✅ Action Step:
Start networking. Reach out to local businesses, offer exclusive deals or a small referral commission, and position yourself as the go-to cleaning partner.
Relationships like these bring consistent work with zero ad spend.

5. Get Reviews & Testimonials
Let your happy clients do the talking.
People trust other people’s experiences more than any ad you could run.
Good reviews = more bookings. Period.
✅ Action Step:
After each job, follow up and ask for a review.
Make it easy with a direct link to your Google or Facebook review page, or even a printed QR code they can scan right then and there. Ooooh fancy!
