Why Pricing Your Cleaning Services Correctly is Essential
Setting the right price for your cleaning services isn’t just about making money—it’s about running a profitable business that allows you to grow and scale.
To do that, you first need to understand your costs. Knowing your numbers will help you determine your profit margins and ensure you have enough left over to expand your business.
Understanding Your Business Costs
In business, there are direct and indirect costs, also known as fixed and variable costs.
Download the costs template to jot down your business expenses.
Once you have a breakdown of your costs, calculate how much it takes to run your business per month, per week, per day, and per hour using these formulas:
Fixed Costs + Variable Costs = Total Business Expenses
Total Expenses ÷ Hours Worked = Hourly Operating Cost
Adding Profit to Your Prices
Once you know your costs, it’s time to add your profit margin (also called markup). The definition of profit is simple:
Profit = Revenue – Expenses
Here’s the formula to calculate your price, including profit:
(Total Business Expenses + Desired Profit) ÷ Billable Hours = Hourly Rate

Why Value-Based Pricing Matters
While knowing your costs is essential, value-based pricing truly sets you apart from competitors.
Clients don’t just pay for cleaning—they pay for a superior experience. Here are some things that add value to your service:
✔️ Attention to detail
✔️ Excellent customer service
✔️ Use of eco-friendly products
✔️ Professional appearance & reliability
These differentiators allow you to charge higher rates and position yourself as a premium cleaning service rather than a budget option.
How to Research Local Market Rates
Before setting your final price, check what other cleaning businesses in your area are charging. Market research helps you stay competitive while ensuring you’re not underselling yourself.

Common Pricing Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Underpricing your services – Don’t try to be the cheapest cleaner. Clients value quality!
❌ Not accounting for all costs – Factor in travel, supplies, insurance, and admin time.
❌ Ignoring your local market – Research competitors to find a profitable price point.
Think Like a Customer
One simple trick to pricing correctly?
Ask yourself what YOU would expect from a professional cleaning service.
If a cleaner came to your home, you’d expect them to:
✅ Be reliable and professional
✅ Provide clear communication
✅ Deliver outstanding results
✅ Charge a fair rate for their expertise
Build your business around these client expectations, and you’ll attract higher-paying customers who value your work.
